Shoebox Appeal 2014

Shoebox Appeal 2014

For the last few years our church has supported the Blythswood Christmas shoebox appeal.  Last year we filled 65 shoe boxes – a record for Fulwood. Can we beat this total in 2014? Added to each box will be a piece of age-appropriate Christian literature in the local language.

This is a simple but effective way of reaching out to those in need. It shows the love of Jesus in a practical way and it’s not difficult to choose gifts for people who have so little. Things we take for granted are often luxuries for people living in desperate poverty. By filling a shoebox with simple gifts you can bring joy and laughter to someone this Christmas. Shoeboxes will be distributed to Albania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania and Serbia.

How can you get involved? Simply get an empty shoebox and wrap it in Christmas paper but keep the lid and box separate. Decide which age group and gender you would like your box to go to. Leaflets to help you will be available at the reception desk from 12th October.  At the same time you can look at some completed boxes in the foyer, as examples.

Your box should be delivered to church by the week of 10th November.  An exact date will be given in ‘church life’ nearer the time. Thank so much!

It’s Friday: “Emmanuel” from Martin Smith

It’s Friday: “Emmanuel” from Martin Smith

A new video from Martin Smith reminding us that God is with us:

You are here in the hurricane
You carry me through the driving rain
All I need to know is You are with me

You are here in the desert sun
And in Your shadow where I belong
All I need to know is You are with me

We believe that our God will keep us ’til the very end

You are here, You are here, Emmanuel
You are here, You are here, Emmanuel
You will stand by our side, Emmanuel
You abide with us, Emmanuel

You might like to know that Martin is appearing in Manchester on the 10th December 2014.

LIVING A GREAT LIFE

Positive Living in a Negative World

Swimming against the tide is not easy. We live in a world which challenges how we live as Christians. Do we live by “do’s” and “don’ts” or can we live a great life by taking hold of how God longs for us to live?

“I came so you can have real and eternal life, more and better life than you ever dreamed of!” John 10:10 (Message)

Our Autumn morning series looks at the Book of Proverbs which is a treasury of wisdom and tips for living a great life.

It’s Friday: The Vicar of Baghdad

It’s Friday: The Vicar of Baghdad

What must it be like to be a Christian living in Baghdad, Iraq?

What must it be like to be the Vicar to those people and also to work for peace between Sunni and Shia Muslim communities?

What must it be like to do all of this with the debilitating disease multiple-sclerosis?

That’s what Canon Andrew White, The Vicar of Baghdad does.

Andrew is also in twitter: @vicarofbaghdad.

Recently vice.com produced a series of 3 short films documenting Andrew’s life; they are inspirational, challenging and heart-wrenching:
