It’s Friday: God’s Will at Work

It-s-Friday_thumb.jpgCould you say this about your day-to-day work?

What I do is all about my Lord, all about my Saviour and everything I do is only because I have him, and because he allows me to do it.

I’m not smart enough to do this on my own, I’m not strong enough to do this on my own. I take all my strength from him and then I turn around and try to make him happy with the things that I do for other people.

It’s Friday: “Weakness is the Way” with J. I. Packer

It-s-Friday.jpgMany of us have enjoyed the writing of J. I. Packer, most famous of which is probably Knowing God which he wrote back in 1973.

In this video he gives testimony to his personal experiences of weakness and contrasts that with a society that spends all its time applauding strength.

J. I. Packer reflects on this further in a new book – Weakness is the Way: Life with Christ Our Strength:

For Christians, weakness should be a way of life. Yet most of us try desperately to be sufficient on our own, and we resent our limitations and our needs.

Renowned Bible scholar and theologian J. I. Packer reflects here on his experience of weakness—having been hit by a bread truck at a young age and now facing the realities of aging—in order to teach us the importance of embracing our own frailty, and also to help us look to Christ for strength, affirmation, and contentment. Find here a path from discouragement to freedom in light of our all-sufficient God.

It’s Friday: “How Great Thou Art” by George Beverly Shea

It's FridayI did have another It’s Friday post lined up, but when I learnt on Wednesday that George Beverly Shea had died at the age of 104 I had to commemorate the event.

George Beverly Shea sang at Billy Graham crusades from the 1940’s for nearly 60 years.

Speaking at George Beverly Shea’s 100th birthday Billy Graham said this:

“I first met Bev Shea while in Chicago when he was on Moody Radio, s a young man starting my ministry, I asked Bev if he would join me. He said yes and for over 60 years we had the privilege of ministering together across the country and around the world. Bev was one of the most humble, gracious men I have ever known and one of my closest friends. I loved him as a brother.”

He sang over 500 vocal solos and recorded more than 70 albums. It’s estimated that he sang to over 200 million people during his many years touring with Billy Graham.

This video is from 1961 and highlights what many would regard as his trademark song How Great Thou Art:

It’s Friday: “Peace Like A River” by Page CXVI

It-s-Friday_thumb.jpgPage CXVI is a project that seeks to make hymns accessible and better known. You’ll find there website here, their Facebook page here and their twitter here.

One of the things they’ve produced is a set of hymns as lullabies. This video is one of those lullabies accompanied by a fun animated video:

If you were wondering where the came from then the answer is here (it’s to do with Page 116 in the C.S. Lewis book, The Magician’s Nephew)

It’s Friday: “The Same Power” by Worship Central

It-s-Friday.jpgOn this Easter Weekend I’m returning to the latest Worship Central Album – Let it be known – and a song that reflects all that we receive through the cross.

The grave cannot contain
The power of His name
Death you overcame
Once and for all

(Also, I have it on good authority that we might be singing this on Sunday night, so why not listen through a few times and be prepared)
