WELCOME STRANGER | Epaphroditus – Man for all Seasons | Philippians 2:4-5, Philippians 2:25-30, Philippians 4:18-19 | Ian Higginbotham

Ian Higginbotham continues our Welcome Stranger series by looking at Epaphroditus who can be found in Philippians 2:4-5, Philippians 2:25-30, Philippians 4:18-19.

A man of Pagan background with the goddess Aphrodite incorporated into his name. To the Philippians he was a reliable and trusted messenger to take their gifts to Paul. To Paul he was so much more – a brother, a co-worker, and a fellow soldier. A man of devotion, faithfulness and self-sacrifice, he put the needs of others above himself and so modelled Christ. Possibly one of the first missionaries taking care, provision and the gospel to the needy – a pattern for courage. One of those people whose very presence and faith makes people rejoice.

WELCOME STRANGER | Lois and Eunice – Parenting Against the Odds | Acts 14:8, 19-23, 16:1-3, 1 Timothy 1:3-7 | Ian Clarkson

Ian Clarkson continues our Welcome Stranger series by looking at Lois and Eunice who can be found in Acts 14:8, Acts 14:19-23, Acts 16:1-3, 1 Timothy 1:3-7.

Lois, a Jewish woman, lived in Lystra, Turkey, which was a Roman Colony. Her daughter Eunice married a Greek who was a pagan. The son of a Jewish mother would normally have been circumcised, but Timothy was not, most likely because of his Father’s antagonism.
Lois, Eunice and Timothy were converted after Paul’s visit, and are examples of women who experienced mixed marriages, yet worked together as a big influence on Timothy and perhaps others. They area great example of parenting against the odds.

Does being a Christian mean I’m free to do whatever I want, when I want, how I want?

WELCOME STRANGER | Priscilla and Aquila | Acts 18:1-3, 18-28 | Andrew Gardner

Andrew Gardner begins our Welcome Stranger series by looking at Priscilla and Aquila who can be found in Acts 18:1-3 and Acts 18:18-28.

Aquila and Priscilla met Paul in Corinth after they had fled Rome in Claudius’s persecution of the Jews, and were earning their living as tent-makers. They found Christ and a year and a half later Paul took them with him to Ephesus where the Church was established in their home. They mentored Apollos and supported Timothy when he became pastor. We consider the dynamics of this active Christian couple where, unusually for the time, Priscilla is often mentioned first, indicating her strong role in the couple’s witness and ministry behind the scenes.
